Visual Literacy in History Education

Abstract This introductory article presents the contributions to a thematic issue about visual analysis of history textbooks and other educational media. It provides brief historical overview use pictures in discusses how developments studies can help move study such beyond questions representation, toward considering different ways which they exercise an agency their own. argues that we need develop complex forms literacy interacting with shows distinctions proposed by authors advance this task. The ends suggesting avenues for further research.
